China claim Games' first golds

China won the first two gold medals of the Athens Olympics through their 10 metre air rifle and air pistol hot-shots Du Li and Yifu Wang.

Du Li of China won the first gold medal of the 2004 Olympics this morning, claiming first place in the women's 10 metre air rifle competition.

Li fired a new Olympic record score of 502.0 from her 10 shots in the final of the competition, held at the Markopoulo shooting centre.

She edged out Lioubov Galkina of Russia, who took silver with a score of 501.5, and Czech Katerina Kurkova, who scored 501.1 to win bronze.

Her compatriot Yifu Wang completed a double in the event for China later on the putting his country into a two gold lead ahead of Russia (2 silver, 1 bronze) who took second and third through Mikhail Nestruev, who led into the final round, and Vladimir Isakov respectively.
