Lombard's Olympic participation in doubt

Irish distance runner Cathal Lombard is expected to give a formal response to the Athletics Association of Ireland on Tuesday after testing positive for the banned blood-boosting drug EPO.

The Irish Sports Council discovered a positive test for the Cork athlete, who faces a potential two-year ban if found guilty.

The AAI have been in touch with 28-year-old Lombard, who has qualified to run over 10,000 and 5,000 metres for Ireland in Athens.

Even if he is found not guilty of the offence, it is now increasingly unlikely that Lombard, who broke the Irish 10,000m record in May, will participate in the Games.

The process could be drawn out if the athlete decides his second urine sample should be examined.

In that case, he would be entitled to be represented at the opening ceremony of the Games or to attend himself.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Irish Olympic team has insisted morale is high in the camp ahead of Friday's opening ceremony.

"Everyone on the team is in excellent spirit and the general mood is optimistic and upbeat", said Chef de Mission William O'Brien. "Yesterday's news had absolutely no negative effects on the team because everyone is fully focussed on the sporting challenges ahead".

"In fact, the main talking point with the team has been the extraordinary GAA result from the weekend - the doping issue was a ten minute wonder".

"The bulk of the track & field squad is now based at our Pre-Olympic camp in Cyprus where the facilities and medical support have been the best ever provided for an Irish Olympic team.

"In the Olympic Village, accommodation and facilities are equally good.  Training is going extremely well, despite very high temperatures".

Commenting further on team morale, the Irish team's sport psychologist, Niamh Fitzpatrick, said: "The mood is really positive and all the athletes are calm, relaxed and focussed on the task ahead.

"It is a happy, fully committed squad that will do Ireland proud".
