The Limerick teenager posted a time of 1:19.05 in finishing just over two and a half seconds down on heat winner Rebecca Redfern.

Olivia Chambers of the United States also posted a faster time in her heat.

"I wanted to get out and have a good morning swim into tonight," she told RTÉ Sport. "It's a case of job done. I’ll have look back at the race and see where I can improve on for later."

Ní Riain will make her final apperance of a memorable games back at the swimming arena tonight where she is hopeful another medal is a distinct possibility.

"That’s always the aim of the evening swim," she said. "I just need to clean up a few little things and see where that will get me this evening."
