Para cyclist Ronan Grimes set a new personal best and national record in the C4-5 1000m time trial at the Paralympics but he just missed on a spot in the medal race-off.

The Galway man clocked an excellent time of 1:06.411 to give himself a fighting chance of progression.

However he was nudged out, and will now turn his focus to Saturday's individual pursuit.

"I did no training for this event," he told RTÉ Sport. "Maybe that was it, no nerves, just enjoying it.

"This is a combined C4/C5 event. There are specialists that are just training for this one minute of power, effort, which I don't have, but I think in a normal world championships in a C4-only event (my time) is probably a medal.

"I'm not going to be in the final but a PB, you have to celebrate it.

"I've three more (events). Tomorrow is the individual pursuit which should suit me a bit better. It's against a stacked field, but I'm looking forward to that.

"Then next week it's on to the road for the time trial and the road race."
