Paris 2024: Tokyo champion Ellen Keane eases into SB8 100m breaststroke final

Ellen Keane booked her place in the women's SB8 100m breaststroke final at Paris 2024 after finishing joint first in her heat on Friday morning.

The Dubliner, who won gold at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, led the way for much of the second heat and both she and Britain's Brock Whiston finished in a time of 1:24.59.

Their time was the joint-second fastest of the heats, behind Spain's Anastasiya Dmytriv Dmytriv who won heat one in a time of 1:22.91.

Keane told RTÉ Sport she is looking forward to this evening as she plans to retire after the Games.

"I had so much fun," she said. "When I was walking out I pulled the headphones back a bit and just embraced it.

"I knew we only had to drop a few girls for this evening's final, so I wanted to soak up the atmosphere and find my friends and family and give them a wave."

Keane was not going full bore this morning, saying she was "having a bit of fun with my strokerate", but she is under no ilusions how difficult it will be to medal this evening.

"Para swimming has progressed so much and I'm not naive about how strong the girls I am racing against are. I love that. I hate it, but I love it.

"It will be a nice fight tonight to get on that podium. I'm really excited for my last swim."

The SB8 100m breaststroke final will take place at 7.21pm.
