Barry McClements declared himself happy with a new personal best in the final of the S9 100m backstroke.

He built on a fantastic swim in the heats earlier this morning to come home in seventh place in a race won by Bogdan Mzgovoi of the Russian Paralympic Committee in 1:01.65

Speaking to RTÉ Sport after clocking a time of 1:05.76, the Co Down man said: "I'm very happy, it was a good experience. The aim was to make a final here.

"I’ve done that already and I’ve two races to go. Another PB. My aim was to go 1.05 and not finish last so yeah, I’m happy.

"The aim has always been Paris so it’s a good stepping stone."

The 19-year-old will compete in two more events, the SM9 200m medley and S9 100m butterfly.

"The 200 IM is next. I’m not expecting big things, another PB," the Newtownards club man said.

"It’s a good race to have a bit of fun in. And after that the main event, the 100 fly.

"I’ve already done what I set out to do so it takes the pressure off the next two races really."
