Kerrie Leonard is through to the last-16 of the W2 individual compound in the archery after beating India's Jyoti Baliyan 141-137 on Sunday.

The Co Meath native was up against an opponent seeded three places above her but kept her composure to emerge the winner. She's the first Irish athlete to compete in the sport at a Games since 2008.

"I'm buzzing," Leonard said afterwards.

"I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want from these Games and what I really want to do is get more people into the sport. I want more para archers, I want to bring them along, I want to create a system for spotting talent in Ireland and nurturing it.

"So the longer I can stay in this competition and the more visibility I can give to the sport the better."

She will next face the Russian Paralympic Committee athlete Stepanida Artakhinova on Monday.
