Ronan Grimes missed on a medal at the Tokyo Paralympics, losing his bronze medal race in the Men's C4 4000m individual pursuit.

Grimes was edged out by Colombia's Diego German Duenas in heart-breaking fashion, losing a race he was in control of for a long period.

The Irish cyclist started strongly and raced into an early lead, putting the hammer down and by the half-way point he was 1.638 seconds in front.

Grimes continued to dictate the pace of the race and stretched his lead further. With 1km left to go, he was almost two seconds ahead of the Colombian.

However, Grimes visibly flagged in the final kilometre at the Tokyo velodrome and as his pace dropped, Duenas applied the pressure.

The Colombian turned in the fasted 1k split of the race, overhauling Grimes to edge him out by 1.394 seconds and take the medal.

Elsewhere at the velodrome Richael Timothy set a new personal record in her C1-C3 500m time trial event.]

Timothy, who has represented her native Roscommon in football, has been using the indoor event as preparation for road racing but still turned up the pace in Tokyo,

She completed the 500m in a time of 42.485, while Amanda Reid of Australia took the gold medal with a new world record of 35.581.
