Patrick Monahan is Ireland's only competitor today as the Rio Paralympics come to a close. The Kildare man goes in the T52-53-54 marathon at 4.30pm.

He only took up wheelchair racing in 2013 after being inspired by the London 2012 Paralympics but is the Irish record holder in 1:29.44.

The 30-year-old was also due to take part in the 800m but pulled out to focus on the marathon.

14-year-old swimmer Nicole Turner, who qualified for the final in all five of her events, will be Ireland's flagbearer at the closing ceremony.

It's been a fabulously successful Games for Team Ireland, who have won a total of 11 medals: four golds, four silvers and three bronzes.

Jason Smyth won his third successive Paralympic 100m gold while Michael McKillop also retained his T37 1500m title.

But it was Ireland's cyclists and discus throwers who stole the show in Rio.

Katie-George Dunlevy and her pilot Eve McCrystal secured two medals apiece, winning gold in the B time trial and silver in the B Road Race.

Eoghan Clifford also bagged a pair of medals: gold in the C3 time trial after his bronze in the individual pursuit and Colin Lynch claimed silver in the C2 time trial.

Orla Barry (F57) and Niamh McCarthy (F41) both won silver in the discus before Noelle Lenihan added a third medal with bronze medal in the F38 on Saturday night.

And Ellen Keane capped off a strong showing by Ireland's swimmers, who reached multiple finals, with bronze in the 100m breaststroke.
