Cork woman Orla Barry has won a silver medal in the F57 discus event at the Paralympics in Rio.

Barry's third throw of six took her to 30.06 metres, which was 3.27 metres behind the winner Nassima Saifi of Algeria and two and a half clear of Nigeria's Eucharia Iyiazi in third.

Barry, who is an amputee, won bronze at the London 2012 Games and has now gone one better.

"I'm delighted to be getting silver," she told RTÉ Sport. "One better than I did four years ago so I'm starting to collect the full collection now.

"Everybody who comes here is coming to win a medal. There's nobody here for the day out.

"To be able to go home with a medal is fantastic."

Barry has also won European gold this year and World silver in 2015.

30.06 metres was well inside her PB of 31.18, set earlier this summer, but comfortably clinched her place on the podium.

"It's not a personal best, there is more in me, but any day I can throw over 30 is a good day really," she said.

"I am gaining on her (Saifi) all the time and the plan is to close the gap and maybe some day take her down!

"We'll have to put more work in and see where we can get more distance out of it."
