Nhat Nguyen had to bow out of the European Badminton Championships on Friday after injury forced his withdrawal during the first game of his quarter-final.

The Dubliner was facing current world number two Anders Antonsen in the last eight of the men's singles of the championships which are being held in Huelva, Spain.

Seeded sixth, Nguyen had booked his place in the quarter-final match on Thursday after beating Finland's Kalle Koljonen.

But the two-time Olympian's bid to upset Denmark's double European champion Antonsen did not go to plan.

Nguyen was forced to withdraw nine minutes into the first game, whilst trailing 11-6, with Antonsen now advancing to the semi-finals.

"The Irishman admitted he knew it was a risk to compete in the European Championships before full recovery and was hoping for an improvement after his match today, but his body could not hold up," Badminton Europe said.

This is the second year in a row that the 25-year-old has reached the quarter-final stage at the Europeans, having done so in Horsens, Denmark during the 2025 edition.

He also reached the last eight in 2022 when he was eliminated by Antonsen.
