Former Mayo footballer Oisín Mullin kicked his first AFL goal as Geelong Cats comprehensively defeated the Brisbane Lions in their qualifying final at the MCG.

The 2020 All-Star and Young Footballer of the Year was prominent in what was effectively a quarter-final clash against the Lions, with former Kerry minor Mark O'Connor also on the winning side in a comfortable 112-74 victory.

In his 41st appearance for the club he kicked his first six-pointer early in the opening quarter.

The Kilmaine club man joined the Cats at the end of 2022, playing six games in his debut season of 2023, and doubled that tally the following year, including the club's two finals.

In July the 25-year-old put pen to paper on a new two-year deal and has been heavily involved all season, often operating across the half-back line and midfield and tasked with picking up the opposition's dangermen.

Mullin, who started the game at the iconic MCG as a substitute, spent a good portion of his time tracking Lions' Hugh McCluggage around the middle of the field.

Fellow Irishman O'Connor was involved in a contentious moment late in the first half that gave the Lions a glimmer of hope.

Geelong defender O'Connor had given Cam Rayner the slightest of pushes in the back in the goalsquare, with the Lions star falling down after the contact.

The Cats, who had won a mark at the other end, conceded possession and the six points. Immediately after kicking the goal, Rayner pointed his finger at the Irishman which led to O’Connor’s team-mates reacting, with the match official immediately awarding another free-kick from the exact same spot.

It brought the margin back to 15 points, but the Cats were always too strong and had 38 points to spare at the finish. They now advance to the last four of the competition, a 14th preliminary final in the last 18 years.
