Ireland's Jake Passmore remains in contention to book a place in the Olympics after reaching the semi-finals of the three-metre Springboard event at the World Aquatics Championships.

Passmore squeezed into the semi-finals thanks to a superb final dive scoring 78.20, taking him to 374.15 and 17th place overall.

The top 12 of the next stage will qualify for Paris. The semi-finals take place on Wednesday.

Passmore said: "I'm a bit lost for words. It wasn’t necessarily a goal. I just wanted to do six dives as good as I could. The result was a lot better than I thought it would be.

"For the sixth dive I was so nervous. It felt like there was a massive weight on my shoulders. As soon as my hands hit the water, I knew it was good, but I wasn’t sure how good it was and if it would be enough. It turned out it was. It was a stressful wait to find out if I was true.

"I think gaining experience has helped me hold my composure. There’s more I can give and I know I can finish higher up."

Clare Cryan is in action in the female event tomorrow, while she will join Passmore in the 3m synchro final on Saturday.

Ciara McGing placed 26th in her preliminary event yesterday, missing out on progression.
