Defending world champion Rhys McClenaghan sits third on the pommel horse after the first day of qualifying at the 2023 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp.

With qualifying set to continue on Sunday, the 24-year-old had a confident run with an execution of 8.533 off his usual routine difficulty of 6.4 for an overall score of 14.933.

Leading the way is Great Britain's Max Whitlock who had an execution of 8.466 and difficulty of 6.8 for an overall score of 15.266.

USA’s Khoi Young sits second with an execution of 8.466 and difficulty of 6.6 for an overall score of 15.066.

In the all-round competition, Adam Steele sits just outside the top 50 with Japan’s Ken Chiba leading the way on a score of 85.799.

Steele had a brilliant performance on the vault, coming away with a score of 14.366, but was hampered by a low floor score that included a 0.1 penalty.

Dominick Cunningham also suffered a 0.1 penalty in his floor run, but he still managed a score of 13.7 to sit 37th in that discipline. Cunningham was also in action in the vault competition and sits 21st after a score of 13.366.

Eamon Montgomery is 79th in the floor section after a score of 12.500 following a 6.700 execution off a 5.8 difficulty.

The men's qualifying will finish on Sunday, with the women's qualifying - featuring Irish pair Emma Slevin and Halle Hilton - also starting.
