Emma Slevin has achieved a historic 19th-place finish in the all-around event at the World Gymnastics Championships in Japan.

Slevin, who became the first Irish woman to compete in a World final, improved upon her 21st place in qualifying to finish in front of five fellow finalists in Kitakyushu.

The 18-year-old from Galway recorded scores of 11.266 on the floor, 13.600 on the vault, 12.533 on the uneven bars and 13.733 on the beam.

Russia's Angelina Melnikova grabbed gold after seeing off two rivals from the United States.

Melnikova, who claimed all-around bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, finished with a score of 56.632, ahead of Leanne Wong on 56.340 and Kayla DiCello on 54.566.

"Today was such an amazing experience," Slevin said of her display at the Kitakyushu City General Gymnasium.

"Not my best day, but to able to call myself a World Championships finalist and make history for my country is something I will be proud of forever.

"I'm so thankful to everyone who supported me and helped me along this journey. I’m feeling very motivated to get back into the training gym."
