Irish pair of Nguyen and Darragh claim wins at European Badminton Championship

It was a mixed afternoon for the Irish competitors on the opening day of the 2021 Badminton European Championships in Ukraine, with two singles wins and two losses in doubles competitions.

Olympic hopeful Nhat Nguyen beat Daniel Nikolov from Bulgaria 24-22 21-14 in his opening round in the men's singles.

Tomorrow he will face Zvonimir Durkinjak of Croatia in his last 32 match. Meanwhile, Donegal native Rachael Darragh beat Marija Sudimac of Serbia 13-21 21-17 21-8 in her opening round match.

Darragh will face Ksenia Polikarpova of Israel in her last-32 game tomorrow.

It was a disappointing day in the doubles, however, with the men's pair of Joshua McGee and Paul Reynolds losing 21-11 21-13 to the Scottish pair of Christopher Grimley and Matthew Grimley.

The women's duo of Kate Frost and Moya Ryan lost 13-21 21-17 21-8 to the Ukranian pair Polina Buhrova and Mariia Stoliarenko.
