Ireland's Matt Ryan failed to finish his second run in the giant slalom as a crash dashed his hopes at the Lausanne 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games today.

Ryan clocked one minute 6.80 seconds in his first run to leave him 28th, which confirmed him as the third starter in his second run.

His second split time had him on course to push for a top 20 position, but the 17-year-old clipped a gate and crashed out.

Austria's Philip Hoffmann triumphed in 2.06.31, with Swiss skiers Sandro Zurbruegg and Luc Roduit taking silver and bronze.

"I had a good run going up top, I skied the top flat well," Ryan said afterwards.

"Then, down through the pitch, I skied pretty well. I just got a little low on some of the gates and clipped one of the gates with my skies and had a little crash.

"It’s a little bit sore on my quad, but it will be fine tomorrow."

A total of 22 competitors finished with the dreaded DNF letters by their names on a testing course.

Ryan's focus switches to the slalom tomorrow, with the Massachusetts-born skier looking forward to the event.

"I had a good run in the alpine combined slalom, so I’m excited for the slalom, it’s my favourite event," he said.

Ireland's Emma Austin will also be in action in the slalom on Tuesday.
