Clares Rocket trainer Graham Holland says he sees no reason why the recovered greyhound can’t run in the English Derby.

The dog was stolen from the Holland’s yard on Monday but recovered late yesterday.

Four men have been arrested in connection with the theft of the animal.

The dog had previously won the Champion Stakes and the Produce Stakes.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio 1’s Today with Sean O’Rourke programme, Holland was asked if Clares Rocket would compete at the English Derby next May and June.

“I would imagine so,” he said.

“He’s obviously delighted to be home, he ate all his food last night and has had breakfast this morning and he’s just recovering over the shock of it. I can’t see why not.

“He’s come back in quite good condition. He hasn’t lost lots of weight, [he was] a little bit distressed but very happy to be home.

“On his day he’s probably the fastest dog in Ireland, as it stands.

“There’s always younger dogs and other dogs producing great runs. He’s been a fantastic dog for us, he’s won two very good stakes.

“He won the Champions Stake at Shelbourne Park, he was favourite for the Derby, he won the Produce stakes.

“He’s got another good year in him, and then, all being well, hopefully he can win something and he would then be stood at stud.”

Holland also revealed the special treat given to the returning dog.

“A nice bit of steak, he doesn’t mind a bit of sirloin.”
