Swimming's world governing body FINA is reviewing the decision to let two Chinese swimmers off with warnings for failing drug tests.
Wang Lizhuo and An Jiabao were issued with warnings by the Chinese Swimming Association (CSA) after testing positive for the banned substance clenbuterol.
The CSA said it had been notified of the failed tests in September 2015 and had handed down the punishment "according to FINA anti-doping rules and...the general rules for doping control in sport".
"FINA has received the decisions issued on these two athletes and is currently reviewing them"
The World Anti-Doping Agency told Press Association Sport on Tuesday it would be reviewing the CSA's decisions to determine whether or not to appeal them at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
And on Wednesday a FINA statement said: "FINA notes the recent media articles about positive tests for the Chinese swimmers Wang Lizhuo and An Jiabao for clenbuterol and the sanctions imposed by the Chinese Swimming Association.
"FINA has received the decisions issued on these two athletes and is currently reviewing them."
The Chinese news agency Xinhua last week reported the CSA had announced six swimmers failed drug tests in 2015-16, with Wang and An among three that were named and said to have tested positive for clenbuterol.
That came shortly after a report was published in The Times alleging five positive tests by Chinese swimmers had been covered up.
FIFA added its statement: "As for the 2016 cases, FINA was informed that CHINADA (the Chinese Anti-Doping Agency) is presently conducting the results management process, and that a decision is still to come.
"Whilst not wishing to pre-judge the issue, this is part of FINA's drive to rid our sport of the scourge of doping and protect the majority of our athletes who are clean."
