Ireland’s Aileen Reid has finished sixth in the triathlon at the inaugural European Games in Baku.

Reid, who currently sits sixth - making her the leading European competitor - in the World Triathlon Series,  finished the race in two hours three minutes and 58 seconds, three minutes and 30 seconds behind winner and Olympic champion Nicola Spirig of Switzerland.

Rachel Klamer of Netherlands was second in a time of 2:01.44, with Sweden’s Lisa Norden two seconds further back in third.

Sea conditions were tougher than expected, with a stiff wind creating some chop for the 1500m swim leg.

However, Reid dealt with it well, emerging from the water in 20.46 and posting the fastest first transition to remain within reach of the leaders.

Norden and Kalmer forged clear on the bike stage, with only Spirig able to bridge the gap.

Reid was part of a chasing pack which made little inroads on the leaders, with the gap growing to over two minutes by the time they hit the second transition.

Reid went on to clock a solid 35.37 on the final 10km run.

The Derry triathlete, who has enjoyed a stellar season, said afterwards: "I prepared properly for these Games and I was feeling good - I was expecting higher than sixth.

"But I don't feel sorry about not finishing first because I did my best and I came in the top 10."

Reid, whose place at next year's Rio Olympics is already all but secure after her rise in the world rankings, said she found the windy conditions in the Azeri capital difficult.

"It was windy and wavy, but that is part of the race and I enjoyed it," Reid added.

The 32-year-old returns to competition in Hamburg on 18 July, where she will look to continue her rise up the World Triathlon Series leaderboard.

Russell White from Banbridge and Limerick’s Aaron O’Brien compete in the men’s event on Sunday morning.
