UFC superstar Anderson Silva has failed an out-of-competition drugs test for steroids.

The former middleweight champion, who many consider the best ever MMA fighter, tested positive for drostanolone metabolites on 9 January.

Also, Nick Diaz, who Anderson defeated in his return with a unanimous-decision victory at Saturday’s UFC 183, has tested positive for marijuana. The UFC stated that a hearing will take place later this month.

The 39-year-old Brazilian was only making a return to the octagon following a year out with a broken leg.

Silva and Diaz's camps both declined to comment.

A UFC statement read: "Anderson Silva has been an amazing champion and a true ambassador of the sport of mixed martial arts and the UFC, in Brazil as well as around the world

"UFC is disappointed to learn of these initial results. The UFC has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents by its athletes."
