Lindsey Vonn's leg 'still in pieces' after horror crash

Lindsey Vonn of Team United States crashes out during the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Women's Downhill on January 30, 2026 in Crans Montana, Switzerland.
Lindsey Vonn has returned to the US

Lindsey Vonn has said the injury she suffered when falling in the women's downhill at the Winter Olympics was "a lot more severe" than a broken leg.

The 41-year-old clipped a gate and fell just seconds into the race at the Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre in Cortina just over a week ago, with Vonn airlifted off the mountain and eventually transferred to a hospital in Treviso, where she underwent four bouts of surgery.

Vonn posted an update on Instagram, with a video showing her transfer back to America and subsequent travel to a hospital, with a caption summarising her current condition.

She wrote: "My leg is still in pieces…but I’m finally home.

"Thankful to all of the medical staff who helped me get home and seriously looking forward to my next surgery when I can get the X-fix out of my leg and will be able to move more.

"My injury was a lot more severe than just a broken leg. I’m still wrapping my head around it, what it means and the road ahead…but I’m going to give you more detail in the coming days."

Vonn defied an ACL injury sustained just before the Olympics to line up in Italy, with the skier returning from retirement in search of another gold medal to add to the one she won in Vancouver in 2010.
