Robert Hendrick has qualified an Irish boat for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo after finishing 11th in the semi-finals of the C1 class at the Canoe Slalom World Championships in Spain.
Hendrick, who was the last man to qualify, was first up on the 230m course in La Seu d'Urgell.
With 25 gates to negotiate, a tip would bring him a two-second penalty, while missing a gate altogether would result in a 50-second penalty.
Holding his nerve, Hendrick made it down with a clean run in 95.12 seconds. He then had to bide his time as 29 rivals took to the water.
Each nation is allowed only one place at the Games and Ireland was ranked ninth overall among the 11 qualifying nations.
Hendrick would seem likely to be the man to represent Ireland in Japan, although he is currently second in the national rankings behind Liam Jegou.
