Alex Dunne will take part in a Formula One practice session for the second time this season for McLaren on Friday ahead of the weekend's Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

The Offaly native and McLaren development driver, who currently competes in the Formula 2 feeder series for the Rodin team, will be behind the wheel of the MCL39, which is dominating the 2025 F1 constructors championship as well as the drivers' standings with title rivals Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

In late June at the Austrian Grand Prix, 19-year-old Dunne became the first Irish driver to take part in a F1 session for 22 years and caught the eye by setting the fourth fastest time in first practice that weekend as he sat in for Norris.

Under the rules for 2025, F1 teams are required to field young drivers in free practice twice during the year, increasing from one in previous seasons.

Confirming his participation in FP1 at the iconic Monza circuit, Dunne said: "I'm super excited to be back for my second FP1 with McLaren in Monza this weekend.

"My first one in Austria was an extremely special day for me, but I think to do it again in Monza, which is a track that's so historic and prestigious is definitely going to put a very big smile on my face.

"So really looking forward to it. Hopefully I can build and improve on what was already a strong outing in Austria and help Lando and Oscar as much as possible going into their weekend."

Aside from participating in F1 practice, Dunne will also be back in F2 action this weekend as the series returns for the 11th round of the season at Monza after a month-long summer break.

Dunne, who has won two feature races at Bahrain and Imola in an eventful campaign, is fifth in the drivers' standings on 124 points with four rounds remaining, 30 points behind current leader Leonardo Fornaroli.

The Irishman is an F2 rookie, having driven in Formula 3 last year.
