Alex Dunne will become the first Irish driver to compete in the FIA Formula 2 championship after the Offaly native confirmed that he has secured a 2025 drive with the Rodin team.
The 19-year-old, who became part of the McLaren driver development programme last May, raced in the Formula 3 championship last year, achieving two sprint podiums.
But he will now make the step up to the final rung of the ladder leading towards the prestigious Formula 1 championship.
"I'm pleased to be able to confirm my plans for the 2025 season, which will see me joining Rodin Motorsport and participating in Formula 2," he said.
"I’m looking forward to the upcoming season and thankful for everyone’s support in getting me to this stage – I can’t wait to hit the ground running."
Speaking to RTÉ Sport last month, Dunne had spoken of his desire to secure one of the remaining F2 seats, with Rodin a particular target having tested with the team in Abu Dhabi in December.
This year will also see him serve as a reserve and development driver for the NEOM McLaren team in Formula E, the electrically powered series.
The Formula 2 championship will kick off in Melbourne on 14-16 March, where it will be one of the support series for F1's season-opening Australian Grand Prix.
