World Superbike champion Jonathan Rea strengthened his position at the top of the standings by completing a double success at Imola on Sunday.

The Kawasaki rider followed up his triumph in Saturday's opening race with another impressive performance to equal Carl Fogarty's record for the most wins in the championship.

Co Antrim man Rea's 59th victory came ahead of Welshman Chaz Davies - the Ducati racer finishing 4.019 seconds behind - with his Kawasaki team-mate Tom Sykes in third place to complete a British podium clean sweep.

Ducati rider Michael Ruben Rinaldi had made an early move, before Davies took on the pace at the end of lap three.

Rea, though, was soon on his tail and as the pair jostled for the racing line their bikes touched around Tosa on lap 12.

The Northern Irishman eventually made his pass on the next circuit and from then on he never looked like relinquishing the advantage as he powered towards the chequered flag.

Rea will head into the British round at Donington Park in two weeks' time on 209 points - a lead of 47 points over Davies. Sykes sits third on 137, but only six ahead of Italian Marco Melandri.
