Antrim rider Eugenne Laverty earned 12th in the Grand Prix of the Americas in Austin to stay in the top 10 of the MotoGP standings.

It was the 29-year-old Team Aspar man's third straight points finish of the MotoGP season, on the back of his best ever result in the class, fourth in last week's Argentina GP. He's now ninth in the overall standings.

Marc Marquez retained his perfect MotoGP record on American soil with a fourth successive victory in Austin.

No other rider has won on that track since it became a part of the MotoGP calendar in 2013 and the Spaniard made it a perfect 10 wins from 10 in Moto2 and MotoGP races he has contested in the States by keeping his cool while some of his nearest challengers crashed out.

Valentino Rossi, who had trailed Repsol Team Honda rider Marquez by eight points after two races, went out in the third lap while Dani Pedrosa slid into the side of Andrea Dovizioso in an incident that would eventually lead to both men's retirements from the race.

Reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo finished second behind his compatriot despite leading heading into turn one as Rossi's Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team-mate lost ground twice in the early stages when running wide at corners.

"I'm really happy, I think I did a very good race," Marquez told BT Sport 2 after extending his championship lead over Lorenzo to 21 points.

"I love the people, the American style. Everybody enjoyed the race; it was not very, very fun but we take 25 points and that was the most important."

British pair Cal Crutchlow and Bradley Smith were both unseated in quick succession at turn 11 on the eighth lap, with Smith's bike almost flying into Crutchlow's legs on the edge of the track.

Both men were able to get back on but finished out of the points in 16th and 17th. Fellow Briton Scott Redding was sixth.
