Jorge Lorenzo stormed to victory in the Italian MotoGP for a hat-trick of race wins to inch closer to world championship leader and Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi.

Lorenzo surged into the lead on the opening lap, overtaking Andrea Iannone from pole and comfortably held on to record his third successive triumph, having also won in Spain and France in recent weeks.

The Spaniard finished over five seconds ahead of Ducati's Iannone to move to within six points of Rossi in the overall standings after the Italian completed the podium places.

Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa settled for fourth, while the Monster Yamaha duo of Bradley Smith and Pol Espargaro came fifth and sixth respectively.

Maverick Vinales, Michele Pirro, Danilo Petrucci and Yonny Hernandez rounded off the top 10.

Marc Marquez, the reigning two-time world champion, crashed out with six laps remaining as his struggles this year continued at the Mugello Circuit in Scarperia.

The Spaniard has won just one of the six races this season and lies fifth in the overall standings, 49 points behind Rossi.
