Finland's Jari-Matti Latvala secured his first World Rally Championship win of the season after taking victory in the Rally of Portugal.

Latvala held off a challenge from Volkswagen team-mate Sebastien Ogier to take victory by 8.2 seconds.

Andreas Mikkelsen made it a one-two-three for Volkswagen after grabbing third after Citroen's Northern Irish driver Kris Meeke suffered technical problems.

Latvala, who had failed to score a single point in the previous three races, told the WRC website "This has been one of the most difficult periods of my rally career.

"To come back and win is a unique feeling. It's payback for all those who believed in me."
