Valentino Rossi surged up from eighth on the grid to take his second win of the year at the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island.

The Movistar Yamaha MotoGP rider took advantage as champion Marc Marquez crashed out of the race lead with ten laps to go.

Italian Rossi finished 10.83 seconds ahead of team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, while Bradley Smith came third to complete the first all-Yamaha podium since Le Mans 2008.

Marquez, who clinched his second consecutive title with a second-placed finish in Japan last week, was attempting to equal Mick Doohan's record from 1997 for most premier-class GP wins, with 12 in a single season.

He started on pole and was in the lead with ten laps to go, before crashing out in an incident-packed race that also saw Dani Pedrosa being forced to retire due to bike damage after being clipped by Andrea Iannone.
