Stephane Peterhansel took the second stage of the Dakar Rally on Sunday, making the most of mistakes ahead of him to cross the line first.

The Mini driver cashed in as overnight leader Carlos Sainz misread his directions and headed into the Peruvian desert, with Nassel Al-Attiyah and Nani Roma experiencing the same problems.

Peterhansel now leads the race overall, with Giniel de Villiers and Ronan Shabot trailing in second and third respectively. Peterhansel has a two-minute buffer over the pair of them.

Elsewhere, Joan Barreda won the second stage on the bikes.
