Irish driver Aron Smith gained his first British Touring Car Championship win today at the season’s last event in Brands Hatch.

The Dubliner has steadily improved across the season and has gained a reputation for being one of the most aggressive drivers in the Championship and this was very much in evidence today.

The Dunlop Motorsport Ireland Young Racing Driver of the Year started in 11th place after qualifying but soon set about making his way through the field.

With some determined overtaking moves, Smith moved up to fourth where he finished race one.

It was in race two where Smith made his mark in what is his debut season in the Championship. The young driver took the lead from Tom Onslow-Cole following the first of two safety car periods and he held on in his Ford Focus to take the win in the last event of the season.

Smith now finishes the season as the number one rookie in 2012 and secures a place in the top ten of the standings for this year.

The Redstone Racing Driver was delighted with his first victory saying: “To come here off the back of my first podium result at Silverstone two weeks ago and get my first win at the end of my first season in touring cars is just unreal.”
