Marco Simoncelli was quickest in free practice for this weekend's Portuguese MotoGP at Estoril.

The Italian (San Carlo Honda Gresini) was fastest in both sessions as he sought to make up for crashing out while leading in the wet at Jerez in the last meeting.

Simoncelli clocked one minute 37.663seconds in free practice two, 0.061secs faster than world champion and championship leader Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha Factory Racing), with Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda), second in the overall standings, just 0.003s further back in third.

Casey Stoner was second quickest in first practice, one place ahead of team-mate Pedrosa with Lorenzo fourth.

Italy's Valentino Rossi (Ducati) was fifth quickest in first practice and 0.439 off the pace in fourth in second practice.

Australian Stoner was fifth fastest in the second practice session.

Spain's Alvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) rode in both sessions after breaking his left thigh bone just over a month ago.

Bautista, who suffered the injury during the third practice session in Qatar on March 18, was slowest in both sessions today.
