Liverpool have become the latest club to become involved in Superleague Formula, a motorsport series for high-performance single-seaters bearing the colours of leading football teams from all over the world.

The first race will take place next weekend.

Other clubs associated with the sport include Tottenham Hotspur, Rangers, AC Milan, PSV Eindhoven, Borussia Dortmund and Sevilla.

Liverpool FC's Superleague Formula car was officially unveiled at the club's Melwood training ground this weekend.

Coach Rafael Benitez and the Liverpool squad revealed the red 750 horsepower, V12 powered machine for the local media with a crowd of Liverpool fans trying to sneak a look from outside the Melwood gates.

Leading international stars including Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres, Jamie Carragher and new signing Robbie Keane were on site to admire the newest member of their “team”.

Liverpool's machine hit the track for the first time on Thursday with British test driver James Walker at the wheel. The final driver announcement for the coveted seat will be made early next week.

The "Reds" will be the hometown heroes for the opening round at Donington Park next week – joining Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Scottish giants, Rangers.

“We chose to get in early to close the door on other clubs in the league,” Liverpool Football Club Commercial Director, Ian Ayre said.

“This also provides an interesting and new dimension for Liverpool fans to support their team in a different way and in a different sport.”

The 2008 Superleague Formula schedule kicks off at Donington Park (30-31 August) before moving on to venues in Germany (Nurburgring, 20-21 September), Belgium (Zolder, 4-5 October), Portugal (Estoril, 18- 19 October), Italy (Vallelunga, 1-2 November) and the season finale in Spain (Jerez, 22-23 November).
