The Belmayne Team Ireland A1 Grand Prix team opened the season with an eighth and sixth place finish respectively in the sprint and feature races at round one at Zandvoort in the Netherlands.

Team Ireland's driver Ralph Firman, who was making a one-off return to the series before making way for GP2 racer Adam Carroll, helped his outfit to eight championship points and $50,000 in prize money.

In the 20-minute Sprint race, Firman started seventh on the grid and eventually finished eighth, picking up three points.

The race was a runaway win for South Africa's Adrian Zuagg, with France and the Netherlands taking the other places on the podium.

Firman started sixth on the grid for the 45-lap feature race and ended up with a sixth-place finish with Britain taking the win ahead of South Africa and Switzerland.

After the opening two races, South Africa leads the world cup of Motorsport on 28 points, nine ahead of Germany on 19 with France third on 18. Team Ireland are seventh of the 22 Nations, with eight championship points.

The next round of the series is at Brno in the Czech Republic on 12 October.
