Giancarlo Fisichella insists he can step out of Fernando Alonso's shadow and win the world championship this year.

Fisichella, long rated as one of Formula One's most talented drivers, was well beaten by Alonso last year when the Spaniard became the youngest champion in Formula One history.

But Fisichella, who won the first race of 2005 only to end up 75 points adrift by the end of the campaign, is eyeing revenge over his Renault team-mate this year.

He said: "The important thing is to win the rest of the season and score lots of points. Last year I had some problems, so I didn't have enough points to fight for the championship. This year, I want to win."

Last year's Renault was well suited to Alonso's driving style, with many believe Fisichella's natural talent was not able to shine through due its characteristics.

This time around Renault have delivered a car more to his taste and he is buoyed by recent testing performances.

He added: "It is good. I have got a good feeling with the new car. I am really comfortable in the car and we have made a step forward compared to last year, especially with the rear end of the car."
