Ex-Formula One driver Jos Verstappen won his first A1 Grand Prix race with a stunning charge from the back of the grid in Durban.

The Dutchman crashed out of race one, forcing him to start from 16th on grid for the second contest.

But he stormed through the field and stole the lead on the last lap when Switzerland's Neel Jani suffered a heartbreaking late failure.

Jani had to make do with second with Portugal's Alvaro Parente third.

Alexandre Premat started the day with a win in race one but his day took a turn for the worse in race two when A1GP's pit stop curse struck the championship leaders.

The new series has been plagued by tyre change problems and Premat was delayed for valuable seconds as his mechanics struggled to swap wheels.

When he finally hit the track he was given a drive through penalty but mounted a charging fight back to earn seventh.

Ireland’s Ralph Firman was fourth place but retired from the second race.
