Kimi Raikkonen today became the first-ever winner of the Turkish Grand Prix but he was left to rue late errors from McLaren team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya.

Raikkonen won his fifth race of the season with ease from pole position in Formula One's first race at the new Istanbul Otodrom.

He should have led home McLaren's first one-two in over five years but two spins from Montoya - the final one coming on the penultimate lap – allowed Fernando Alonso to snatch second.

That gave Alonso an extra two points in the championship fight, leaving him 24 clear of Raikkonen.

Alonso fought bravely early on but was unable to keep pace with Raikkonen and lost out to Montoya in the pits before relegating Raikkonen to third with one lap to go.

Alonso's team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella claimed fourth.

Jenson Button drove a superb race from 13th on the grid to take fifth place for BAR-Honda and points for the fifth consecutive race.

Jarno Trulli clocked up more points for Toyota with sixth while David Coulthard's fine start helped him earn seventh for Red Bull.

The Scotsman's team-mate Christian Klien was eighth.

At the start, the first racing lap for Formula One in Turkey proved a dramatic one, with Fisichella getting the jump on Raikkonen. He led for only half a lap though before running slightly wide, giving Raikkonen the chance to pass.

Fisichella found himself down in third by lap two when Renault ordered him to move over so Alonso could give chase to title rival Raikkonen.

Button and Coulthard both enjoyed productive starts and their paths crossed on lap nine when the BAR driver squeezed past the Scotsman to move into the points.

Williams suffered a nightmare three laps which saw both Nick Heidfeld and Mark Webber suffer identical right rear punctures, dropping them out of contention.

Webber's race deteriorated on lap 14 when he was lapped by Michael Schumacher.

The world champion past cleanly but a confused Webber tried to fight back and tapped Schumacher into a spin at the penultimate corner, losing his nose cone in the process.

Webber continued with a new front wing but Schumacher parked his car in the garage. The Australian's race ended on lap 22 though, when another puncture prompted him to call it a day.

Williams suffered a worrying fourth rear tyre failure when Heidfeld spun on lap 30. He retired in the pits.

At the front, McLaren were putting on a masterclass and their superior pit strategy allowed Montoya to leapfrog Alonso, whose challenge for victory was fading rapidly.

The silver cars of Raikkonen and Montoya streaked clear of the two Renaults in pursuit as the battle raged for positions behind.
Button was enjoying the better of that scrap, leaving his last stop late – on lap 47 - and setting a string of fast laps to ensure he jumped ahead of Trulli and into fifth.

Raikkonen was in a league of his own in the lead as Alonso's late pressure on Montoya pressurised the Colombian into a spin as he struggled with a worn tyre.

He was lucky to return to the track just ahead of the Spaniard but ran wide on the penultimate lap to drop to third.
