Jordan hire top rookies

Jordan will have two rookies ushering the team's new Midland era after Narain Karthikeyan and Tiago Monteiro were confirmed as race drivers today.

The Midland Group recently took over Jordan and after installing Trevor Carlin as sporting director, he has moved quickly to recruit two close contacts.

Both Karthikeyan and Monteiro raced for Carlin in junior series and he is convinced they are the right drivers to spearhead Midland's debut season on the Formula One grid.

He said: "We have been very lucky to put together a driver line-up which gives us a really strong package in terms of youth, technical ability, speed and talent.

"I know Narain very well because he drove for me in 1998 in Formula 3 and I have run him in various formulas every year since then.

"We've won a lot of races together. He's very competitive, a super-quick driver, sometimes a little bit raw and wild in his style but he is a proven race winner and I am confident that in our environment he will thrive.

"He's ready for F1 now I think he'll do a good job for us."

Karthikeyan becomes India's first-ever Formula One driver and the 28-year-old knows he has the hopes of a nation resting on his shoulders.

Karthikeyan enjoyed sporadic success in British Formula Three and the Nissan World Series and joins Jordan with substantial backing from Indian companies.

He said: "My aim has always been to compete in Formula One, it is where no Indian driver has been before.

"I've got the hopes of a nation behind me so I've no choice but to succeed now. I have tested with three different Formula One teams at various circuits and I'm going to give it everything I've got so I am confident that this is going to be a good year for me."

Monteiro also has a mixed career in junior formulae behind him and reaches Formula One after salvaging his reputation in 2004 with a runners-up spot in the Nissan World Series following disastrous Champ Car campaign the season before.

The former Minardi test driver is determined not to waste his big break.

"I'm more than excited to be part of Jordan Grand Prix this season," the Portuguese driver said.

"Like all drivers say, it's a dream come true to get into Formula One - my hard work and past results have paid off and enabled me to be here."
