McLaren boss backs new qualifying rule

McLaren boss Ron Dennis believes Formula One's new qualifying rule will boost interest in the sport.

Next season, drivers will have just a single lap in qualifying - taking it in turns to go on the track - as part of the package of changes introduced by F1 bosses in response to last season's declining viewing figures.

"The new qualifying format may well produce more interesting starting grids than we have perhaps been used to over the past couple of years," Dennis said.

Meanwhile, Britain's Ralph Firman tested the BAR-Honda 004 at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain today. The 27-year-old was given the test as a reward for winning the Formula Nippon title in Japan this year.
