China join Formula One calendar

Two European circuits could find themselves off the Formula One calendar after it was officially confirmed today that China will host an annual grand prix from 2004. Shanghai will be the venue after a seven-race deal was agreed with the sport's governing body.

Currently 11 of the 17 races on the Formula One calendar are held in Europe but with China joining Bahrain as a new venue for 2004, several European venues are in danger of losing their place on the calendar. Belgium, Austria and Imola in Italy, which hosts the San Marino Grand Prix, are understood to be the tracks most at risk from the newcomers.

Belgium in particular could face the axe as next year's grand prix at Spa-Francorchamps will only take place if the teams agree to run without tobacco advertising following a dispute over a local law. If it is forced to be dropped from the 2003 calendar, it is unlikely it will return for 2004.

The Formula One teams have been discussing the possibility of increasing the size of the championship to 18 races. However, several teams are opposed to this plan as it costs around £650,000 each to compete in each race while others would prefer an extra race but less testing.
