Schumacher in US pole position

Ferrari's Michael Schumacher maintained his 100% record at Indianapolis by securing pole position for tomorrow's US Grand Prix. The German took top spot for the third consecutive year, finishing 0.268 seconds ahead of team-mate Rubens Barrichello. It marks his sixth pole of the season and the 49th of his career.

Scotland's David Coulthard took third spot in the McLaren, his best finish in qualification since Monaco last May. Juan Pablo Montoya, the only man to seriously challenge Schumacher in qualifying this year, had to settle for fourth place for Williams-BMW. Team-mate Ralf Schumacher posted the fifth-fastest time and will be joined on the third row of the grid by Raikkonen.

It was a disappointing performance by Jaguar's Eddie Irvine as he finished back in 13th position despite being third-fastest in final practice. The Jordan cars of Giancarlo Fisichella and Takuma Sato finished 11th and 15th respectively.
