Fisichella sent home after crash

Italy's Giancarlo Fisichella will miss tomorrow's French Grand Prix following his horror smash at Magny-Cours today. The 29-year-old missed qualifying after his Jordan-Honda slammed into a tyre barrier during final practice. Fisichella escaped without serious injury but after being air-lifted to a local hospital for a check-up the sport's chief medical officer Professor Sid Watkins advised that the driver should not take part in the race.

Jordan had considered waiting until tomorrow to decide whether to appeal for him to race. But instead the Silverstone-based outfit have sent him home to rest before the German Grand Prix at Hockenehim on Sunday week, which is a vital one for the team with Deutsche Post being their main sponsors.

"I don't know what happened," said Fisichella, who smacked into a tyre barrier - missing the concrete wall by a few metres - after hitting the kerb which dislodged the front wing of his Jordan-Honda. "I know I lost the front wing but I don't know why. I feel alright, I just have a slight headache and some neck pain."

"The doctor told me it's not possible for me to race because of the very big deceleration I experienced in the accident so I'm going to rest in preparation for Hockenheim."
