Schumacher wins his fifth Canadian GP

Michael Schumacher cruised to victory in the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal today to move closer to a record-equalling fifth drivers' crown. Schumacher won by just over one second from Britain's David Coulthard to score his sixth victory in eight races this season for Ferrari.

The German's record fifth triumph on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, with team-mate Rubens Barrichello finishing third, extended his lead in the World Championship to a massive 43 points.

Schumacher also saw his title hopes given a massive boost when his two closest challengers both failed to finish in the points. Younger brother Ralf could only finish seventh after a botched pit-stop while fellow Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya missed out on a certain second place when his BMW engine blew.

It was another good day for Jordan as Giancarlo Fisichella finished fifth to score points for the third race in succession.

Afterwards Schumacher said, "The strategy was very tight after we knew Montoya was on a two-stop so I had to push until after his second stop so we would know he was behind me. We had a very strong package overall. I am pretty happy with the result. Our expectations are high for the next race at the Nurburgring. I have to say thank you to our test team because they do a fantastic job."
