Jaguar Racing have launched an investigation into the fuel irregularity which sent Eddie Irvine to the back of the starting grid for today's Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. Irvine, who had finished 15th, had all his qualifying times wiped out after a discrepancy was discovered between a sample of fuel taken yesterday with the original which was submitted two weeks ago.
"The FIA (motor sport's world governing body) have penalised Jaguar Racing for a discrepancy between the two samples and not because of any perceived performance advantage gained," said Jaguar in a statement today. "Yesterday's fuel sample does not, in any way, enhance performance. Because the two samples are not identical, the team has been penalised for a discrepancy between samples and this is in breach of FIA regulations."
