Britain's Jenson Button has been given his target as Renault set their sights on a top-four place on their full-blown return to Formula One. Button today helped unveil the French team's first car since their buy-out of Benetton at their headquarters near Paris.
Renault dominated F1 in the mid 1990's winning a succession of drivers' and manufacturers' titles with Williams and Benetton but have a more modest aim in the first year of their comeback.
"I would be delighted if we finished fourth at the end of the season," said Renault's Motorsport boss Patrick Faure. "Our aim this year is modest. We know how difficult it is to get results in Formula One. We aim to make progress this year and finish the season as close as possible to the top three teams."
"But it is more important to be as close as possible to the top three teams rather than finish fourth. If we can make progress, in 2003 we can be fighting for wins and be in the race for titles," Faure added.
Button, in his second season with the team, and new team-mate Jarno Trulli will give the new car its first run-out in Barcelona tomorrow. "If you look at all the work we have put in over the year then we should be very competitive, but we will see tomorrow when we get into the car for the first time," said Button.
