Formula Ireland has been confirmed as the new premier single seater racing class in this country as and from this season by the sport's governing body, Motorsport Ireland. Lengthy negotiations have now been successfully concluded with Mondello Park Ltd, the promoters of Formula Ireland, and Motorsport Ireland is happy that this new single seater car now meets all of the requirements set down for the Premier Class.
As with all of the other classes included in the 2002 racing calendar, Formula Ireland has had to meet a number of key criteria in order to gain approval. The new Premier Class, which has Championship status, will commence racing at the Mondello Park meeting on May 5/6 with at least ten cars on the grid. It has been agreed with the promoters that the minimum Championship Class requirement of twelve cars will be met from July 1 onwards.
Motorsport Ireland is also pleased to note the final specifications for Formula Ireland have been revised to ensure that its performance level will be superior to all other classes, as is in keeping with its position as the Premier Class. Having studied the proposed new car Motorsport Ireland is satisfied that Formula Ireland can, and will, provide a level of experience which will facilitate the career development of Ireland's best young drivers.
