Northern Ireland's Eddie Irvine declared himself fitter than ever as Jaguar unveiled their new R3 Formula One car yesterday. "I've been doing some training and had very good results," Irvine said after uncovering the car Jaguar hope will bring significant improvements on a disappointing 2001.
"I'm getting fitter as I get older," Irvine said, championship runner-up with Ferrari in 1999 and now the oldest driver on the grid at 36. "This is the first proper Jaguar," added Irvine, who will once again be partnered by Pedro de la Rosa next season.
Jaguar's team principal Niki Lauda made clear that Irvine had everything to drive for and reinforced the message that Jaguar had a duty to give the drivers a better car than the old R2. "The weight was a problem last year and the aerodynamics were a problem. This car is much better in both areas."
