Mitsubishi launch World Rally car

Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi officially launched their first World Rally car today. Mitsubishi have used Group A cars on the world stage, but launched the new Lancer Evolution WRC earlier this morning.

Group A cars are permitted to run fewer modifications than WRC cars and Mitsubishi have created the new model to keep pace with their championship rivals. The team's two drivers, Finn Tommi Makinen and Belgian Freddy Loix, tested the car last week and will debut the new model in the San Remo Rally in October.

Loix claimed afterwards: "It's exciting to be involved in the World Rally car project and it was great to drive the car for the first time." Makinen has won four world titles with Mitsubishi and is on course for an unprecedented fifth this year. The team also have 26 world rally wins since 1992.
