Brazilian Ricardo Zonta escaped unhurt despite crashing his Jordan car during testing at the Italian circuit of Monza. Zonta was sent spinning into the barriers after his car suffered suspected suspension failure. Meanwhile, Briton David Coulthard finished fastest in the McLaren with a lap time of over one minute and 23 seconds. Kimi Raikkonen in the Sauber was second, two-tenths of a second behind while Coulthard's team-mate Mika Hakkinen was third.
Italian Jarno Trulli was fourth fastest in the Jordan, but was eight-tenths of a second off the pace, while German Andre Lotterer who is standing in for Jaguar's Eddie Irvine, finished the day fifth.
